10 Steps to Finding a Wife: #2 Pray Biblical Prayers

Young men should not expect to find a good wife if they never ask God for one. Scripture says: “Ask, and it will be given to you” (Mt. 7:7). Abraham’s servant prayed with a specific request that the Lord would lead him to the right wife for Isaac. “O Lord…please grant me success today” (Gen. 24:12).

Proverbs 19:14 says “a prudent wife is from the Lord”. Good marriages are a gift from God. Therefore, pray and ask him for an understanding wife. Here are five sample prayer requests:

  1. A wife that is a Christian. “You shall not intermarry” (Dt. 7:3).
  2. A wife that is a well-suited companion. “I will make him a helper fit for him” (Gn. 2:18).
  3. A wife that will happily submit. “Wives, submit to your husbands” (Col. 3:18).
  4. A wife that has godly character. “Let your adorning be…a gentle and quiet spirit” (1Pt. 3:4).
  5. A wife that adorns and strengthens. “An excellent wife is a crown to her husband” (Pr. 12:4).

Notice, Eliezer petitioned for a special sign in his prayer. He asked that the future wife of Isaac would be the one who greeted him and kindly offered water to his camels. This was not a foolish request, for the woman who does such a thing is kind, hardworking, and respectful.

Today’s young men should set out fleeces in their prayers, but not foolish ones, such as: “Lord, I pray that the wife of my dreams will be the first person I meet on the bus that’s wearing a red, polka-dot dress and carrying a blue handbag.” This is silly. Instead, a man should pray the following: “If I speak to a lady about the things of the Lord and she responds kindly and if my parents give unsolicited positive comments about her, let that be proof that we should continue our interaction together.”

Summary: Godly young men must mimic the Bible’s prayers when asking and seeking for a godly wife.
