10 Steps to Finding a Wife: #5 Have Cash in Your Pocket

A young man with no money and no job is not ready to pursue a woman in marriage. But a man with work and cash in his pocket has earned the right to seek a bride. This is because one of the three central roles of a man is to provide. A husband “nourishes” his wife (Eph. 5:29), which includes putting food on the table.

Eliezer proved Isaac was a man of means by giving Rebekah golden rings and bracelets (v. 22). Notice, this was not part of the bride price. Long before marriage was discussed, this jewelry served as an initial gift to show that Isaac’s team wasn’t working on the cheap. He had the means to provide for her.

During the early stages of pursuing a wife, a man should show that he has some padding in his wallet. For example, he always picks up the tab when out to dinner.

This idea brings some men to despair. They want to be married but when they reach in their pockets, they find nothing but lint. They imagine themselves at the base of a large staircase. The top step is marriage but from the bottom, they cannot reach it in one step. This means it will take a series of small actions to reach his goal. Consider following steps:

  1. Stop wasting time – For the young man not ready for wedding bells, the best thing he can do now is stop throwing away valuable time. Discard online gambling. Stop scrolling the internet. Pick up a book or learn a trade. He should start developing himself so that marriage becomes one step closer.
  2. Study hard – Work hard at school so he’ll obtain the education necessary for a trade or studies at university.
  3. Get a job – Steady work should always precede a man taking a wife, because if a man will not work, then he cannot feed his family (2Th. 3:10).
  4. Save money (for a ring or lobola, buying some property, and/or securing a home) – Proverbs 24:27 says, “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” This means that a man should secure his livelihood (the “field”) before getting married and establishing his “house”.
  5. Get married

Summary: Godly young men should prove their maturity to a woman buy securing and saving money.
