10 Steps to Finding a Wife: #7 Shoot Straight

To shoot straight means to tell the truth. A straight shooter gets to the point, no stories. After Eliezer met Rebekah’s parents, the family set a delicious spread before him. But before Eliezer could enjoy the tasty meal, he delivered an important message (Gen. 24:33-51).

He clearly set out his purposes in coming. He told the whole truth and wasn’t deceptive with his plans. Isaac wasn’t interested in playing games. He wanted a wife and this was the purpose of the visit.

Because women can easily be hurt, men must treat them with sensitivity. Young men have broken this rule innumerable times in every culture and in every era. It comes in four different forms.

  1. The Player. This man makes as if he’s seriously interested, even though he just wants a girlfriend. Or, even worse, he wants only sexual gratification. This man is like Amnon, who connived and lied to Tamar so he could get her into bed (2Sm. 13).
  2. The Pretender. This man exaggerates. He overstates his intentions. Instead of starting slowly, he feigns plans for immediate marriage. He never counts the cost and soon the family finds he’s all sizzle and no steak, clouds and wind with no rain (Pr. 25:14).
  3. The Procrastinator. This man dates a girl for years without explaining his real intentions. He likes her enough to stay, but not enough to marry her, so he strings her along. He’s indecisive, limping between two opinions, as Elijah warned about (1Kng 18:21).
  4. The Peddler. This man peddles lies, telling the woman one thing and his friends and family another. He’s like Samson, who lost his wife to one of his friends, then later asks for her back, to the confusion of her parents (Jdg. 15:1-2).

It is easy for a man to play games with the heartstrings of a woman. This is something he must never do. God promises to bless the one  who “walks blamelessly and…speaks truth in his heart” (Ps. 15:2). An honest man will lay his cards on the table up front, saying: “Sally, I want to marry a godly girl, as I know you’d like to marry a godly husband. I’d like to pursue a relationship to see if we are compatible for each other.”

He’s also honest when he discovers the relationship will not work. This takes courage because such an admission is painful. He tells her kindly but directly that the relationship is over. He doesn’t extend the relationship because he afraid to tell her the truth.

Summary: Godly young men speak clearly and truthfully about their intentions for the relationship.
