Social Media-Centric

Social media has become so interwoven with the fabric of our modern society. Almost everyone you interact with is bound to use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, or a combination of these, with some level of frequency. You may be viewing or listening to this TARIF episode as a result of social media. In Africa, Social media users have been steadily rising in recent years, with Satista reporting that the number is over 384 million with Facebook generating most of that traffic with over 50% of the market. That number is bound to increase with each passing generation’s growing involvement in the online world. A tool like social media with such widespread reach has immense potential for good or evil.

How should Christians think concerning the use of social media?

Benefits of Social Media for Christians

1. Amplifying the Gospel

Social media offers an unparalleled opportunity to spread the Gospel far and wide. Just as the Apostle Paul utilised the Roman roads to reach various regions, we can use digital platforms to share the message of Christ. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many churches that previously had very little to no online presence turned to live-streaming services primarily for the benefit of their members who were restricted from gathering. An unexpected and positive spin-off from this was that many believers in weak churches were for the first time exposed to sound biblical teaching. This led to an unprecedented inflow of people seeking sound biblical teaching and many unbelievers heard the unadulterated gospel proclaimed for the first time.

2. Enhancing Christian Visibility

Jesus said in Matthew 5:14–16, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Social media allows us to let our light shine before men, making our faith visible to our communities. It can be a powerful tool for the proclamation of the gospel; promoting church events, sharing of information, and maintaining engagement with both members and the broader community.

3. Fostering Community and Connection

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly known as Twitter) provide avenues for fostering a sense of community among believers. They allow for quick updates, prayer requests, and the sharing of testimonies. These interactions can help build a stronger, more connected church family.

Dangers of Social Media for Christians

1. Worldliness and Distraction

While social media itself is not inherently sinful, its misuse can lead to worldliness and distraction. The algorithms are designed to keep users engaged and can lead to addictive behaviour and an unhealthy focus on the transient and trivial. These platforms aim to keep our attention for as long as possible, often at the expense of deeper, more meaningful engagement with Scripture and prayer.

2. Jealousy, Strife, and Hero Worship

The Apostle Paul warned against jealousy and strife in 1 Corinthians 3, where he addressed the divisions caused by people aligning themselves with certain leaders. Social media can exacerbate this issue, leading to discontentment and division within the body of Christ and even to hero worship by some, of prominent leaders.

3. Promotion of Self

A significant danger of social media is the temptation to use it for self-promotion rather than for the glory of God. As Paul noted in Philippians 2:19-21, many seek after their own interests rather than those of Christ Jesus. It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking validation and praise through likes, shares, and followers rather than focusing on faithfully serving in our communities.

 Biblical Exhortation and Boundaries

The key to navigating social media wisely is to align our use of it with biblical principles. In Philippians 2:19–21, Paul speaks highly of Timothy’s genuine concern for others and his Christ-centred focus. This should be our model as well.

1. Aim to Please Christ (2 Corinthians 5:9)

Our primary goal in using social media should be to please Christ. This means ensuring that everything we post is edifying, Christ-glorifying, and serves the purpose of making His name known.

2. Glorify God in All Things (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Whether we are posting a sermon, a quote, or a church announcement, our aim should be to glorify God. We must continually ask ourselves if our online presence reflects our commitment to honouring Him in all that we do.

3. Avoid Self-Serving Motives (Philippians 2:21)

We must guard against using social media for self-promotion. Our focus should be on serving others and advancing the Gospel rather than seeking personal fame or recognition. This requires regular heart checks and accountability within our communities.

Practical Steps for Effective Social Media Use

1. Create Content that Aligns with Your Goal

Ensure that all content shared on social media aligns with your goal of making and maturing disciples of Jesus Christ.

2. Vary the Media Type

Different types of content engage people in different ways. Utilise a mix of images, videos, live streams, and written posts to reach a broader audience and keep engagement high.

3. Collaborate and Network

Partner with other believers and Christian organisations to expand your reach and foster unity within the body of Christ. Collaborations can amplify your message and create a sense of solidarity in the mission.

Conclusion

Social media is a powerful tool that, when used wisely, can significantly advance the Kingdom of God. It is not the enemy; rather, it is a platform that can be redeemed for the Gospel. As we navigate this digital landscape, let us keep our primary focus on living out our faith in our daily lives, serving faithfully, and stewarding our gifts wisely. May our use of social media always aim to please Christ, glorify God, and avoid self-serving motives.
