Punishing Success? A Biblical Worldview of Wealth Tax

Recently, I was encouraged by an article in the Business Day. It praised South Africa’s finance minister, Mr Enoch Godongwana, for rejecting a proposal to introduce a wealth tax – that is, a tax on the assets of certain wealthy individuals in addition to the normal income tax that they pay at the highest rate.

While the world, particularly in popular politics, has long since abandoned biblical principles, it was heartening to see a politician doing the right thing, although his motivation might have been influenced by practicality rather than morality. There are, of course, many global examples of how wealth taxes actually result in lower tax collection as wealthy individuals leave the country—a valid concern for a country like South Africa, where nearly 80% of personal income tax is collected from just 2.4% of its population!

Another weekend passes by, packed with hundreds of sporting events on which to gamble away hard-earned income. Whether the vice of choice is English Premier League, PSL, IPL, Super Rugby, Racing or Golf, statistically speaking South African’s gamble away more than R28 billion every week, or R1.5 trillion annually, having grown 550% in the past 4 years. This now represents ~20% of SA’s GDP and is one of the country’s most burning social issues.

Bitcoin has recently hit new all-time highs, breaching $120,000 per coin last month. R10,000 invested 5 years ago would have been worth R103,000 today. In comparison, an investment in the JSE all-share index and the S&P500 index would have only yielded R18,000 and R19,000, respectively.

As a Christian, what should we be doing with this information? Could a significant investment in Bitcoin have solved many of the problems Africa faces today? Could it have solved your own financial problems?

How Government Hurts Business and What to Do About It

The ANC has been in power for 31 years and makes several empty promises every 5 years. In fact, President Ramaphosa addressed the World Economic Forum in 2019 specifically on the topic of ease of doing business, promising change. 6 years later, there are no noticeable improvements. The party is simply not committed to growth and business-friendliness.

Recently, South Africa was ranked the most difficult place to do business according to the Daily Investor, the last of the 49 countries included.
