Nigeria is the deadliest place in the world to follow Jesus. Militant Muslims hunt Christians there the way a lion stalks a wounded gazelle.

According to the Open Doors Watch List, North Korea is the most dangerous place in the world for Christians, but Nigeria is the most deadly. In 2023, nearly 5,000 Christians were killed worldwide (that’s thirteen murdered a day) and 90% of these martyrdoms happened in Nigeria. More Christians are killed in Nigeria than all other nations combined, most often by Islamist jihadist groups like Boko Haram.

Sown, Grown, Blown, Mown, Gone

Every hour, over 300 people in Nigeria die. That’s five people every minute. This is more deaths per hour than any country in Africa and fourth highest in the world. China is first, at 1,300 deaths per hour, followed by India (over 1,000) and the U.S. (340).

The hundreds of Nigerians that pass into eternity every hour remind us of the brevity of life, as do life expectancy rates around the world, especially in Africa. Though numbers are on the rise compared to just a few decades ago, when life expectancy in Africa was 36 years old in 1950 (compared to 64 years old today), modern life expectancy is minuscule compared to the earth’s earliest days when Adam lived for 930 years and Methuselah died at 969. Enoch went to heaven as a young pup at age 365, but only because the Lord took him away before tasting death.

A Tale of Genocide Ignored

As a result of the current war between Israel and Hamas, charges of genocide have been levelled against Israel by South Africa and the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Israel has been accused of intentionally targeting Palestinian civilians in Gaza as they seek to defeat their long-time enemy Hamas. Any loss of civilian life is always tragic and regrettable during a time of war. Yet, the matter in this war is exacerbated by Hamas using women and children as human shields, which is a tactic long used by the Iranian-backed Hamas.

The Broken Window Fallacy in Africa

South Africa is 5^th in the worldwide Crime Index. Somalia is #12, Nigeria is #14, with three more African countries filling out the top 20. But is this really bad news? Perhaps there’s a silver lining. Doesn’t crime create jobs?

If there was less crime, security guards would lose their jobs. Without significant theft, steel manufacturers and welders would have no work because citizens would have no need for burglar bars on their doors and windows. The profits of businesses that sell razor wire, security cameras, stun guns, and padlocks would plummet. Brick masons who build security walls would lose their livelihoods. Couldn’t we then say that crime is beneficial at least in creating jobs? Couldn’t we say crime brings financial good to a country?

Duped by Prosperity

Earlier this month in Nigeria, a 27-year-old man was shot and killed after taking a specially concocted potion he believed would make him invincible to bullet wounds.

According to the Daily Post in Nigeria, the man was testing a traditional experiment prepared by an indigenous doctor. He told his friend to take hold of the gun, take aim and shoot. His friend complied. After his companion pulled the trigger, the victim collapsed immediately and the shooter fled.

In May of this year, 2023, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law the Employment Equity Amendment Bill of 2020. This bill amends the EEA, the Employment Equity Acts of 1998, which demands that employers have an equity plan reaching numerical goals for certain designated groups. This came two months before the recent landmark case in the United States, Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, whereby the US Supreme Court considered race-based college admissions to be unconstitutional.

Gambling in Africa

How should African Christians think about gambling? Is gambling a significant issue on the continent and does Scripture affirm or oppose it?

According to an Africa Business Insider article in March of 2023, the highest gambling markets in Africa are the countries of South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda. In South Africa, though there are several dozen operational land casinos in the country, the most popular form of gambling is sports betting. Sports betting is also the most common form of gambling in Kenya. According to Statista, as of 2021, gambling among youth in Africa was highest in Kenya, with 84% saying they’ve participated in gambling.

The Killing Ground

This Sunday in northwest Nigeria a man was stoned to death by angry Muslims after he supposedly blasphemed the prophet Muhammed. The video shows a large crowd that included children pelting Usman Buda, a butcher, with stones. By the time the police arrived, Buda was unconscious and was later pronounced dead. The guilty parties will almost certainly escape justice, as is almost always the case.

Silly Student Loans

According to the Nigerian Premium Times, on Monday, June 12th, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu signed into law a bill to establish a Students Loan Fund to provide interest-free loans to Nigerians seeking higher education.

But contrary to popular opinion, these interest-free student loans are most likely unwise, not only in Nigeria but worldwide. Why? Because there is little chance these loans will be repaid. This is for three reasons.
