Free Speech and the Murder of Charlie Kirk

Last night, on 10 September 2025, I joined millions worldwide to read in horror about the assassination of American Christian and political activist Charlie Kirk. It pains us to the core to observe the loss of life of such a young, gifted man, just thirty-one years old, with a wife and two young kids who will now grow up only hearing stories about their Dad.

But the hurt only grows when one thinks about how he died—assassinated on live TV by a bullet through his neck from a rifle a hundred yards away. Who can know God’s ways? His works and thoughts are higher than ours (Ps. 92:5). It’s natural to ask why the Almighty would ordain that such an asset to the kingdom would be brought to Heaven so soon.

Hate Speech vs. Free Speech in South Africa

Last Saturday in Johannesburg, in the massive FNB stadium in Soweto, Julius Malema (leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters political party) stood before a stadium of tens of thousands and gave us yet another perfectly blatant example of genuine hate speech:  https://twitter.com/i/status/1685542774601371648  If shouting, “Kill the Boer (white Afrikaners), kill the farmer!” (while making gun sounds and hand-gun motions) is not hate speech, what is?2  If “explicit words meant to incite violence”3 still has anything to do with hate speech, surely Malema should’ve been behind bars long ago.

Ugandan Courage

This week Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law restrictions on homosexual behavior. The law does not criminalize homosexuality per se, but does advocate strict penalties for “aggravated homosexuality”, defined as sodomite activity with a person having HIV, as well as minors or those that are vulnerable.

Many around the world have condemned Uganda’s stand against homosexuality, saying it is an attack on human rights. The United States in particular has threatened economic consequences, with President Joe Biden calling the new law “…a tragic violation of human rights—one that is not worthy of the Ugandan people, and one that jeopardizes the prospects of critical economic growth for the entire country.”
