What About Gay Christians?

Ever since the legal recognition of same-sex marriage in 2008 in South Africa, social activists have been pressuring the church to do the same.

This raises the question: Does the category of “gay Christian” have biblical warrant?  Is some form of homosexuality acceptable in the church?

A 2020 survey in the USA noted that among religious LGBTQ+ adults, 77% identified as Protestant, Roman Catholic or other Christian.  Statistics for South Africa are unavailable, but are not expected to vary wildly from the USA statistics.

This discussion is important because, within the evangelical church, there are some who are desperate to make peace with the moral revolution and are looking to endorse the acceptance of openly gay individuals and couples within the life of the church.  Sadly, many denominations have since accepted same-sex ideology and are even promoting it.

Here are three considerations when discussing the idea of homosexual Christians.

Is Childbearing Sinful?

Answering 439 Bible Contradictions

Answer: No, childbearing is honorable and women that embrace feminine roles like motherhood give evidence of genuine conversion.

Problem: Genesis 1:28 commands fruitfulness and 1 Timothy 2:15 promises salvation through “childbearing”, while Leviticus 12 implies a woman has sinned by giving birth.

Explanation: Women should prize their childbearing years. Within this two-decade window, God has made women capable of bringing an immortal soul into the world. Genesis 1:28 commanded Adam and Eve: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.” The modern world rejects fruitfulness by lauding homosexuality, delayed marriage, unrestrained birth control, vasectomies, and abortion. Are Same-Sex Desires Sinful?

Storms are brewing in the African church over homosexuality. The United Methodists in Africa now welcome LGBTQ+ members, though Methodists in countries like Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe have protested. The 2025 Cape Town Pride Parade expects another big turnout, even while the Anglican Church of Southern Africa has voted against blessing same-sex couples.

“UNNATURAL” IN ROMANS 1

Romans 1:26 uses the word “unnatural” to describe romantic, same-sex attraction because this desire contradicts the original condition. “Unnatural” means contrary to the factory settings God installed at birth, such as a person’s sex.

Am I Gay?

“Unlike the rest of the African Continent, South Africa is worlds apart when it comes to being classed as an LGBTQ+ welcoming destination.”  This is the opening line on a popular gay travel website.  According to the South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and other studies, approximately 5-10% of our South African population supposedly identify as homosexual in some way.  Every year in the church I pastor I hear of more friends and family of our flock being drawn in by the aggressive gay agenda in this land, and I must be ready to minister the gospel to any repentant sinner who walks through our doors or seeks biblical counsel.  Here is one example of how my wife and I have sought to minister to youth and young adults who are tempted by same-sex attraction.

Uganda’s Constitutional Court Upholds Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023

What is liberty without wisdom and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint.” – Edmond Burke.

This June, our continent will see its first-ever “Africa Pride” event, a virtual event celebrating homosexuality across Africa. The event is organised by “Reverend” Troy Perry, an American activist, in protest against the criminalisation of homosexual behaviour in Africa. This announcement comes as a bill has been introduced in Botswana’s parliament which would amend the constitution to incorporate specific protection for “intersex persons”, a move which has been widely condemned by Christians in the southern African nation.

Zimbabwe and King Manasseh

In February of 2024, the Government of Zimbabwe sent out a press statement strongly rejecting the efforts that foreign nations have made to ensnare its citizens into homosexual behaviour through the offers of educational scholarships.

Like other African nations such as Uganda, Zimbabwe firmly condemns Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender activities. Zimbabwe opposes the viewpoint of several neighbouring countries, namely South Africa and Mozambique, both of which promote significant LGBT protections.

On Godly Men and Picking Fights

–– Paul Schlehlein

Godly men are called to fight, but they must pick their fights prudently. “Fight the good fight of the faith,” Paul said (1Tm. 6:12). “I have fought the good fight,” were his last words (2Tm. 4:7). This differs from today’s 11th Commandment: Thou shalt be nice. Break this command and you’ll incur the world’s wrath.

Consider the recent expulsion of final-year law student Shaun Christie from North-West University in South Africa. On 6 February 2024, an orientation programme was held for first-year students at the Potchefstroom Campus. Students were forced to sit for LGBTQA+ indoctrination, which opposed many of the students’ religious convictions. Christie, a Christian, publicly stood and voiced his protest at the presentation, which was captured on camera. Afterwards, the university expelled him for what they called disruption and denying free speech. Christie refused to back down.

Gay Weddings & The Christian

Many have been asking lately, ‘Should a Christian attend a gay wedding?’  The biblical answer is extremely nuanced and highly complex:  Never, no, not under any circumstances.  In the eyes of God and according to His Word, any such pseudo-wedding is an abominable, blasphemous, profaning of marriage and a pagan celebration of the sodomy that destroys lives, ruins society, makes a mockery of Christ, and merits eternal punishment (Gen. 1-2; Gen. 19; Lev. 18; Rom. 1:18-32; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; 1 Tim. 1:10; Eph. 5:22-33).

Why Caster is Faster: A Christian Response to Transgenderism

–– Paul Schlehlein

If you think the transgender debate hasn’t reached Africa, think again. Trans ideology has been gaining ground in Africa for decades.

Take, for example, Caster Semenya, a South African middle-distance runner and two-time women’s Olympic gold medal winner in the 800 meters. Semenya doesn’t just win races. Semenya dominates, the media describing the races as “coasting to victory” and “winning easily”.

The problem is that Semenya is not a woman. Semenya is a man who identifies as a woman. He has all the biological marks that only males possess: XY chromosomes, male genitalia, and high testosterone levels. He’s married to a woman with whom he has a child. Even his rare genetic condition can by definition only affect males. How then can Semenya call himself a woman?

Namibia Gets It Right on Same-Sex Marriage

On Wednesday, July 19th, Namibia’s upper house of parliament passed a law banning same-sex marriage. This law defines marriage as a union between “persons of opposite sexes”. One member of parliament, Elder Filipe, said that “the marital union is between a man and a woman and that must be respected.”

Ugandan Courage

This week Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law restrictions on homosexual behavior. The law does not criminalize homosexuality per se, but does advocate strict penalties for “aggravated homosexuality”, defined as sodomite activity with a person having HIV, as well as minors or those that are vulnerable.

Many around the world have condemned Uganda’s stand against homosexuality, saying it is an attack on human rights. The United States in particular has threatened economic consequences, with President Joe Biden calling the new law “…a tragic violation of human rights—one that is not worthy of the Ugandan people, and one that jeopardizes the prospects of critical economic growth for the entire country.”
